Every week, Andre and Alen bring a piece of Polish farm culture to the big Saturday market. The two regularly get in their car, drive across the border, and pick up their vegetables right where they grow: on family farms that they know personally. Together with the farmers, they plan what will be planted and harvested on the fields in the coming season.

In addition to seasonal, fresh vegetables, their stand—which you'll find outside the market hall gate on Eisenbahnstraße—also offers pickled gherkins. And because everything here really does come full circle, the cucumbers that don't make it to the sales counter don't end up in the trash. Andre's mom grabs some salt, dill, and mustard seeds and lets fermentation do the rest. What was once “too small,” “too crooked,” or “too many” is then turned into jars full of crunchy preserves. These are accompanied by Polish honey or mustard in small jars. Her stand is somewhat reminiscent of a small corner shop and impresses with the heart and skill that can be seen in each of her carefully selected products brought to Kreuzberg, and later tasted. A stand that enriches the weekly market with all kinds of fresh and crispy produce and offers many a treasure for the pantry.

Even before the market opens, the hall's gates open: The butcher counter, cafés, bakeries, and some shops are there for you early in the morning. And it's also worth visiting after the market closes – for example, for a glass of something, a pizza, or to soak up the hall's atmosphere.

Traders

The heart of Markthalle Neun is the market: vibrant stalls, a fish counter, glass-fronted bakeries, and a butcher’s shop; a brewery in the basement and open kitchens. Shopping here means getting up close and personal with food production, bringing it out of anonymity and into urban life. From Monday to Saturday, you’ll find a varying array of producers, traders, and restaurateurs. Check out who’s here and when.
