The market café is coming back to life
Many of you will surely remember Inge. For 34 years, her coffee stand was a fixture at Markthalle Neun – a hostess, a meeting place, a constant amid the hustle and bustle. A place for the first coffee of the day, for short breaks with an egg roll between the bakery and the brewery, for a pleasant chat when the baskets are full and the legs are tired. No fuss, just a simple, reliable ritual that every market needs. In 2023, Inge retired – leaving a noticeable gap behind her.
But now something is happening again: new life is moving into the historic wooden hut in the heart of the hall. Months of screwing, building and planning have gone into it. Not a big move, more of a change of scenery. Something old is being reimagined – with respect for history and excitement for what is to come.
In this way, we are continuing the spirit of the market café: located in the middle of the hall, a coffee stand as a meeting place for neighbours, traders and visitors from all over the world. Early in the morning, a pot of tea, perhaps a bread roll with minced meat, a wish for a nice day and – that's all it took. This simplicity, this self-image of the market café as a social glue, remains.
What's changing? The place is getting a new chapter, a new signature, new ideas. What remains is the attitude: the market café as the heartbeat of the hall. As a place to arrive, take a deep breath, and come back to.
So, keep your eyes peeled! Even before the grand opening, there will gradually be sandwiches, pots of coffee, and other delicacies available here.
