A look behind the scenes of Markthalle Neun

A large building has been standing between Eisenbahnstrasse and Pücklerstrasse in Kreuzberg for over 130 years. Red clinker brick and elaborately decorated sandstone on the outside, a high vaulted ceiling on ornate metal columns on the inside: a cathedral of good food. Lively and popular for decades, then dusty and almost forgotten. The ninth of fourteen former market halls in Berlin is now once again filled with small-scale trade and lively food crafts.

Where once only three discounters turned the hall into a mere building, the market has been bustling again for over 10 years: Bakers with flour-dusted trousers rub shoulders with butchers in white coats. Brewers in wellies meet up for a coffee with confectioners, cheese- and fishmongers. Brandenburg farmers bring their produce to the city for the weekly market, small traders showcase the culinary diversity of their regions and you there's the amazing possibility to taste your way around the world at the weekly Street Food Thursday. There's a lot of life in this hall – and even more than meets the eye.

Our team invites you to take a look behind the scenes. We look back at the history of the hall, from the basic idea and construction in the 1890s to the time in the border area of West Berlin and the revitalisation of the hall in the 2010s. We take a look at the day-to-day workings of Markthalle Neun and the diverse in-house food production facilities. We wander through the historic cellar vaults and of course – products from the hall are also tasted. By the end, we will have a better understanding of how the microcosm of Markthalle Neun works in the 21st century.
